Executive Summary

PCWatchdog is an independent, non-partisan oversight platform dedicated to bridging the gap between complex bureaucratic conduct and the citizens of Pawnee County. We transform raw public data into actionable community intelligence to ensure that public office remains a public trust.

My family is native to Pawnee County. After moving back home in 2020 during the peak of the COVID-19 hysteria, I chose to raise my three children, Austin, Dakota, and Abel, here in Pawnee City alongside my wife Katelyn.

I’m not much for politics. In fact, I’d prefer to have nothing to do with it. But as life would have it, politics have unavoidable effects on our daily lives as citizens. When the decisions of elected officials impact my family and my neighbors, I have no choice but to take it personally to some degree.

Personal Motivation

In 2025, I was notified of a proposed increase in our property value, which meant our property taxes would inevitably climb. I couldn’t make sense of it until I discovered that local officials were conducting "drive-by" and "google maps" based appraisals, unethical and insufficient practices that ignored the reality of our homes. To add insult to injury, I had taken the liberty of blurring my property out of Google Maps some time prior, as is my right to do so; only reinforcing the fact they were blindly appraising my home without any regard for the effects it would have on me or my family.

"They were assigning a significant value increase to a house they literally hadn't even seen, based on assumptions that had no basis in the actual condition of my home."

This was an offensive moment for me. I took it personally, but I chose to fight back with facts. I attended the public hearing regarding proposed property value increases and provided evidence contrary to the claims made by the assessors; even inviting local officials into my home to witness firsthand the structural issues I'm burdened with. The Board was sympathetic and understanding of my predicaments; the appraiser being not so thrilled about my criticism and contest of mass appraisal practices. Ultimately my presence and efforts resulted in the retension of my current property value.

"Hard as it may be for the common man to make time for these meetings. Your presence inevitably moves mountains, even if only to add witness to conducted business. Unethical practices can't be curbed if nobody's present to hold them accountable. Government will always treat your absence as consent; generally resulting in an agenda being pushed without opposition."

There is a direct correlation between these inflated valuations and the $300,000+ price tags on new HUD developments by local contractors. The viability of these high-cost projects relies heavily on an elevated median property value to justify the initial investment.

Consequently, a systemic push to increase valuations across the board inevitably follows the footprint of these new developments. Our community is comprised of elderly residents on fixed incomes and young families—not just large-scale agricultural operations or legacy landowners. Property appraisals must reflect the actual integrity and condition of our existing neighborhoods, rather than being artificially leveraged to support the profit margins of "big name" developers. The "little man" should not be the collateral damage of a skewed market average.

Foundational Philosophy

For those who wonder where I stand on the political spectrum: I am a registered Independent. I do not lean left, nor do I lean right. It is my firm belief that the "left wing" and the "right wing" are merely birds of a feather, and those birds often fly in a direction that ignores common sense and lean more into partisan bias; typically failing to authentically take those outside their parties, the less fortunate, or the less outspoken into genuine consideration.

The Core Mission

The existence of this platform is rooted in a single, unwavering principle: Public office is a public trust. When that trust is met with inconsistency, whether through mismanagement of county-wide ISP provisions or the bureaucratic hurdles placed in the path of our Local Sheriff, the citizens are the ones who pay the price.

We recognize that the average citizen is busy working 9-to-5, raising children, and managing the weight of daily life. PCWatchdog stands as a beacon of reliable, distilled information for those who want to stay involved but are simply too overwhelmed to fight the bureaucratic clock alone.

Citizenship Impact

I understand that the weight of an elected or appointed position is no small burden. However, that burden is precisely why no choice should ever be made lightly or dismissed as insignificant. The actions taken within the walls of our county buildings ripple outward, affecting citizens of all classes with varying degrees of severity.

"A 'small' administrative change may mean nothing to a man of means, but it can be the definitive line between stability and bankruptcy for another."

It is disheartening to see public conduct influenced by small-town prejudices, reputations, or assumptions based on perceived lifestyles. PCWatchdog stands to ensure that our community is considered as a whole. We are here to ensure the concerns of the hardworking, the struggling, and the quiet are not discarded simply because they lack the means, the privilege or the 'right' name to be heard.

Operational Oversight

It is important to clarify the intent of this platform. As our oversight begin, I am not here to weave tales of grand conspiracies or backroom villainy. While I believe that the potential for "under-the-table" dealings exists in every corridor of power, what I have witnessed firsthand in Pawnee County is far more mundane, and in many ways, more dangerous.

I have seen honest ignorance and, more frequently, a complacent ignorance regarding the impact of administrative decisions. Much of the friction in our county stems from simple negligence and a culture of overbearing micro-management. Decisions are frequently being made by those who lack the technical expertise or boots-on-the-ground perspective required to make them effectively.

"The 'Good Ol' Boy' system isn't always a malicious conspiracy; often, it is simply the sound of unqualified people making decisions they don't understand for people they haven't bothered to meet."

PCWatchdog is not here to hunt for monsters. We are here to highlight the consequences of negligence. We believe that by shedding light on these operational failures, we can force a return to competence, accountability, and the expertise our citizens deserve.

Community & Family Support

Building this resource has been a significant undertaking, and it would not have been possible without the encouragement and support of the Pawnee County community. Your feedback and shared concerns are what drive this project forward.

A very special thanks goes to my wife, Katelyn, for her unwavering patience throughout the development of this platform. Beyond just "putting up with me" during long nights of coding and research, Katelyn provided the essential "consumer-level" perspective this project needed.

As someone who isn't bogged down by technical jargon, her quality-of-life advice helped me strip away the complexity to ensure this site remains accessible for every day neighbors and seamless for those accessing our data via mobile devices. Her influence is woven into the very navigation of this site, ensuring it serves the people effectively.
